The Manchester Drugs and Alcohol Strategy Team is a high level
strategic body consisting of colleagues from Health, Probation,
Police, Housing, Prisons as well as the voluntary sector and
other partners who have a responsibility to deliver the National
Drug Strategy, ‘Tackling Drugs to Build a Better Britain’ and
Manchester’s Alcohol Strategy, within Manchester. Download
the DAST 2005-08 here.
The DAST support team is based within the Chief Executives Department
of Manchester City Council as a part of the wider Crime and Disorder
Reduction Partnership. The support team is responsible, along
with main partners for co-ordinating Manchester’s response to
drug and alcohol issues and relevant national initiatives.
This DAST support team is structured thematically with a commissioning
and contracting team for services as well as thematic leads for
young people’s treatment, drug treatment within the criminal
justice system and alcohol treatment.
The work of the DAST is cross cutting, and the current work
programme of the DAST contributes directly to the Manchester
Community Strategy through all eight of its principal indicators.
This work ranges from making Manchester more attractive to visitors
with a thriving night-time economy, to improving the health and
quality of life of residents.
This work is either achieved directly through work undertaken
by the DAST partnership itself, or through membership of other
groups such as the Manchester LSP theme group on health inequalities,
or the City Safe scheme.
